PanACEA’s capacity development programme is predicated on building trial capacity while conducting trials for new drugs to shorten and simplify treatment. Integral to PanACEA’s clinical trials programme is a capacity development plan for bringing together centres from across Africa with diverse infrastructure and training needs. In PanACEA I, through ongoing trials, considerable progress has been made in developing stable platforms from which TB clinical trials could be undertaken. Capacity building will remain a cross-cutting theme of forthcoming activity across all work packages.
PanACEA assists its partner sites to strengthen their capacity to conduct research. After careful assessment of each site’s needs budget has been allocated for those areas which are most beneficial to the site.
The PanACEA II capacity development plan consists of the following components:
- Strengthens local capacity to conduct studies to highest standards
- Upgrades existing infrastructure to foster state-of-the-art research
- Promotes leadership in health research
- Ensures sustainability through long-term vision
